Reclaim. Repurpose. Reuse. RECREART

We welcome Deborah Allan to our blog page to tell us a little bit more about herself and her beautiful handcrafted jewellery

For as long as I can remember, I have always bought second hand second hand items when it comes to clothes and jewellery (and most other things for that matter.) Initially, this came from necessity, as clothes that were funky, fashionable and appealing to me, were expensive. It was the time of jumble sales on Saturday afternoons, with clothes piled up high. It was a case of steam in and pull out your treasure if a glint of a cool pattern on a material caught your eye. Sometimes two people would be vying for the same thing! It was often very funny. I would go with my friend Sally and our housemates, and we’d have such a giggle when we got home, trying everything on.

I moved to San Francisco and worked in a vintage clothes store on the famous Haight Street. I hasten to add It was on the lower end of Haight Street, worlds apart from its Bohemian counterpart on the Upper Haight, the notorious Haight Ashbury. The store opened with the name “The Velvet Pelvis”, but pretty soon Jay, to my disappointment, changed the name to “Gaberdines”. Gaberdines was really eclectic. It sold clothes and some retro home wares, and later down the line a record store joined the space. I learned a lot from Gaberdines, including the love of thrift shopping! I was hooked. Vintage was like an itch and I just had to scratch it!

I had a street artist license and made brooches with the plastic slide mounts from 35mm film, electrical transistors and other “trash” elements, so it was a natural progression to start using aluminium bottle tops. I made my first pair of earrings to go with an outfit for a fancy dress party. They were crudely made, not at all refined, but the idea was born. Fast forward many many years, you’ll still find me working with bottle tops, hopefully I have perfected the technique and the items I produce now are unique, well-finished and comfortable to wear. A few years ago, I also started working with vintage tins (biscuits, cakes, you know the kind.)

I love to create wearable art from items that would have been destined for land fill.
